About Emily Martin
Founder, EM Mind Finds LLC
I believe that light comes through even the hardest fractures in life. My journey began far from the lecture halls and archives I now pursue.
I spent my 21st birthday in a rehabilitation center, after growing up in a home marked by neglect and abuse. In my early twenties, I carried those patterns into relationships that left me with both visible and invisible scars. But I also carried something else: the conviction that truth is worth telling — even when your voice shakes.
Escaping the cycle of survival in Indianapolis, I moved to Virginia, where Medicaid resources gave me access to the mental health care that my home state couldn’t provide. With that support, I transitioned from needing welfare to building a life of self-sufficiency — one that now allows me to travel across the United States, conduct research, and grow my education with purpose.
Along the way, I studied automotive work — a nod to my family of mechanics whom I am proud of — and trained in paralegal studies, advocating for vulnerable communities and even standing up in court for members of my own family. My Catholic faith, my love for genealogy, and my passion for uncovering cultural truths all shape the work I do today.
I am not a victim of my past. I am a witness — to resilience, to the way cultures heal, and to the way people can choose to break silence in the face of injustice. My dream of motherhood may look different than I once imagined, but I carry forward the hope of one day becoming a foster parent and building a home that welcomes children of many cultures.
Through EM Mind Finds LLC, I am creating a platform to explore and share stories that connect archaeology, journalism, and human rights. From fighting Islamophobia to studying the deep past in places like Jamestown, I believe that culture is not just something to be archived — it is something to be lived, defended, and illuminated.
